    Ceiba pentandra is a large tropical tree, with impressive roots that look a lot like radial walls coming out of the trunk. The trunk itself is covered with protective spikes when the tree is still young. The ceiba tree represents the universe in mayan mythology, the roots standing for the underworld, inhabited by nine gods, and the canopy representing the sky, home to thirteen celestial gods. The trunk, our world, is the path leading from the first to the latter. At least that’s what the guide explained when I visited the Tikal ruins :) Anyway, it’s a very handsome tree.
